Telomere length as a biomarker of aging and diseases

چکیده
As research related to healthspan and lifespan has become a hot topic, the necessity for reliable practical biomarker of aging (BoA), which can provide information about mortality morbidity risk, along with remaining life expectancy, increased. The chromosome terminus non-coding protective structure that prevents genomic instability is called telomere. continual shortening telomeres, affects their as well function, hallmark agedness. aforementioned process potential cause age-related diseases (ARDs), leading bad prognosis low survival rate, compromise health longevity. Hence, studies scrutinizing BoAs often include telomere length (TL) prospective candidate. results these suggest TL measurement only an approximate appraisal its implementation into clinical practice routine use BoA many limitations challenges. Nevertheless, measuring while determining other biomarkers be used assess biological age. This review focuses on importance telomeres in health, senescence, diseases, summarizing conclusions previous evaluating BoA.

Is telomere length a biomarker of aging? A review.
Telomeres, the DNA-protein structures located at the ends of chromosomes, have been proposed to act as a biomarker of aging. In this review, the human evidence that telomere length is a biomarker of aging is evaluated. Although telomere length is implicated in cellular aging, the evidence suggesting telomere length is a biomarker of aging in humans is equivocal. More studies examining the relat...
متن کاملTelomere Length and Aging
Telomeres, the TTAGGG tandem repeats at the ends of chromosomes, become progressively shortened with each replication of cultured human somatic cells (reviewed in Wong and Collins (Wong & Collins 2003)) until a critical length is achieved, at which point the cell enters replicative senescence. This situation can be reversed by the enzyme named telomerase that is responsible for Telomere Length ...
متن کاملTelomere length and reproductive aging
BACKGROUND Rate of reproductive aging may be related to rate of biological aging. Thus, indicators of aging, such as short telomere length, may be more frequent in women with a history suggestive of premature reproductive senescence. METHODS Telomere-specific quantitative PCR was used to assess telomere length in two groups of women with evidence of reproductive aging: (i) patients with idiop...
متن کاملIs Telomere Length a Biomarker of Adaptive Response? Controversial Findings of NASA and Residents of High Background Radiation Areas
Telomere length and stability is a biomarker of aging, stress, and cancer. Shortening of telomeres and high level of DNA damages are known to be associated with aging. Telomere shortening normally occurs during cell division in most cells and when telomeres reach a critically short length, DNA damage signaling and cellular senescence can be triggered. The induction of an adaptive response by sp...
متن کاملIs Telomere Length a Biomarker for Aging: Cross-Sectional Evidence from the West of Scotland?
BACKGROUND The search for biomarkers of aging (BoAs) has been largely unsuccessful to-date and there is widespread skepticism about the prospects of finding any that satisfy the criteria developed by the American Federation of Aging Research. This may be because the criteria are too strict or because a composite measure might be more appropriate. Telomere length has attracted a great deal of at...
